When can US college coaches contact you?

Updated 26 October 2026

American contact rules are written around the US school year, where students graduate in May or June. Australians finish in December, so the dates can be confusing. Here they are in Australian school years.

These examples are for a player finishing Year 12 in December 2027, who is in the US Class of 2028. Shift the years to match yours.

You can contact coaches any time

The rules limit what coaches can do, not what you can do. You can email a coach, send your AussieScout link and fill in a program's recruiting questionnaire at any age. Coaches can read it and watch your tapes. They just may not be allowed to reply until the dates below.

NCAA Division I

  • Calls, messages and recruiting conversations start in June of Year 11. That's 15 June for men's basketball and 1 June for women's.
  • Official visits (the college pays for the trip) start in August of Year 11 for men's basketball and January of Year 12 for women's.

NCAA Division II

  • Calls, texts and emails are allowed at any time.
  • In person contact, offers and official visits start from 15 June of Year 11.

NAIA and junior college

NAIA and junior college coaches can contact you at any time. Most start seriously recruiting players in their last two years of school.

What this means for you

By June of Year 11, coaches at every level can talk to you. To work out your US class, see US class year explained. They'll want to see your highlight tapes, a full game tape, your stats and your school reports before they do. Have your profile up to date before then, and keep adding to it through Year 12.

Rules change

The NCAA updates its recruiting rules most years. If you're unsure, ask the coach. College coaches know exactly what they're allowed to do.
