The Australian school year in US terms
Australian school years follow the calendar year. Year 12 ends in November or December, and most Australians start college the following August, right before the season. So a player finishing Year 12 in 2026 is in the US Class of 2027.
| School year in 2026 | Finishes Year 12 | US class | First college season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year 12 | 2026 | Class of 2027 | 2027–28 |
| Year 11 | 2027 | Class of 2028 | 2028–29 |
| Year 10 | 2028 | Class of 2029 | 2029–30 |
| Year 9 | 2029 | Class of 2030 | 2030–31 |
Eligibility
Under the NCAA's age based rules adopted in 2026, a player's five year window starts at the earlier of full time college enrolment or the academic year after they turn 19. Most Australians finish school at 17 or 18, so starting the August after Year 12 usually leaves all five seasons. Each profile shows our estimate; the NCAA Eligibility Center makes the decision. More in NCAA eligibility for Australian basketball players.
Players already at US junior colleges are on AussieScout too, with the Division I and II seasons they have left.
Academics
Australian schools report letter grades or percentages each semester, not a US GPA. The NCAA converts each state's grades its own way, and some common subjects don't count. Our academics pages set out the rules for every state.
Where Australian juniors play
Most top juniors play for their club in state competitions and for their state at the national championships at Under 16, Under 18 and Under 20 level. Older players often play NBL1 or another state league. School basketball is smaller than in the US, so club and state teams are where to look.
