TCE to GPA: how the NCAA converts Tasmanian grades
Updated 6 November 2026
The NCAA converts Tasmanian results to US points with two tables: one for Years 9 and 10, and one for the TCE awards in Years 11 and 12. An EA or an HA is worth 4.0, a CA 3.0, an SA 2.0 and a PA 1.0. Your ATAR doesn't come into it.
In Years 9 and 10 a Tasmanian E converts to 1, the same as a D.
Years 9 and 10
These are the NCAA's conversions for Tasmanian Year 9 and 10 reports, from its guide for Australian schools (September 2026).
| Grade | US grade points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.0 |
| B | 3.0 |
| C | 2.0 |
| D | 1.0 |
| E | 1.0 |
TCE awards in Years 11 and 12
For the Tasmanian Certificate of Education and Statement of Marks:
| Award | Meaning | US grade points |
|---|---|---|
| EA | Exceptional Achievement | 4.0 |
| HA | High Achievement | 4.0 |
| CA | Commendable Achievement | 3.0 |
| SA | Satisfactory Achievement | 2.0 |
| PA | Preliminary Achievement | 1.0 |
Which TCE subjects count
Only core subjects count: English, maths, science, social sciences such as history, geography and economics, and a few others such as languages.
The NCAA's guide for Tasmania names English Foundations, Applied Mathematics, Maths Bridge, General Mathematics and Maths Methods Foundations (Years 11 and 12), Life Science and Physical Science Foundation (Years 11 and 12), Introduction to Sociology and Psychology (Years 11 and 12, as social science), Religion and Philosophy Strand 3 and Religious Education Strand 3 (Years 9 and 10) and Studies in Religion (Year 12) as approved. It names Commerce, Housing and Design, Object Design, Physical Education and Sport Science as not approved.
Every other subject is judged by its exact title against the NCAA's Course Title Usage Guide. Titles with words like General, Applied, Foundations, Health or Education don't count unless the state guide names them. That's why English Foundations, Applied Mathematics and General Mathematics count in Tasmania: the Tasmanian guide names them. Check any subject on the Tasmania page.
A worked example
One semester of Year 12 for a made up Tasmanian student:
| Subject | Award | US grade points |
|---|---|---|
| English | HA | 4.0 |
| General Mathematics | CA | 3.0 |
| Biology | SA | 2.0 |
| Modern History | HA | 4.0 |
| Sport Science | EA | Doesn't count |
Four core subjects for one semester make 2 core courses. The core GPA for that semester is 3.25: (4 + 3 + 2 + 4) divided by 4. The NCAA does the same across every semester from Year 9 to Year 12.
Proof you finished school
The NCAA accepts the TCE with the Statement of Marks, and the Euka Assessed or University Pathway. It doesn't accept the ATAR or the Euka Assessment-free Pathway.
Work out yours
Put your grades into the GPA calculator. It uses the NCAA's Tasmanian tables and shows your core GPA and core courses straight away. For why the ATAR doesn't count, see ATAR to GPA.
